13 Dec Work Smarter: 18 Ways To be More Effective at Work
The African work places have become so diversified in our current dispensation, however we still have so much to do.
Scrambling to meet deadlines, answering phones, replying the emails, the daunting traffic, being the brand even when you’re off the clock.
It’s all so…..much.
So how about we try this for a change: fix these new habits into your schedule and see if it’s still all so exhausting to maintain a work-life balance.
18 Ways To Be More Effective at Work
Here are 18 tips to enhance workplace effectiveness.
1. Be a Planner
The power of having a plan can never be overemphasized.
Create a list of the most crucial goals you need to achieve for the day with a clear cut ‘how to’.
Create a spreadsheet and plan each day for the entire week.
This will enhance your focus and help manage your time.
2. Prioritize Your Tasks
Now that we’ve established the power of a solid plan you should know next that you have to prioritize your tasks.
Analyze your tasks based on urgency and level of difficulty.
The easier tasks should be conquered first as it would make it easier to get things off your list.
3. Automate Tasks
People who say dogs are man’s best friend have probably not tried out cutting edge technology.
There’s a lot of technology created precisely to enhance your effectiveness in and outside the work place.
Here’s a few that could help in the workspace;
- Evernote: Digital notepad that syncs with your cloud so you can access notes from your computer mobile app
- Todolist: It’s exactly what you think it is. It’s a to-do list chrome extension that helps you set deadlines, remainders and generally keeps you organized
- Grammarly: A program that helps you correct and articulate your written grammar as you type. Great for writers, reporters, content providers.
- StayFocusd: An extension that helps you limit your access to websites that distract you so you can stay on track.
These are just a few. A plethora exists just for the purpose of enhancing your effectiveness.
4. Eat Healthy
Food is extremely important to brain power which we need to keep up while working. Eat healthy and keep healthy snacks to stay fuelled through the day.
5. Put Your Phone on Silent Mode
You’ll agree with me that work hours aren’t exactly billed for conversation with peers and family. Corresponding through phone in the work place has been ranked 4th on workplace distraction.
The constant buzz and pings from your phone gets you distracted and before you know it, you’re neck deep in the Instagram explore page.
6. Virtual Meetings
You do not always have to fix or attend meetings in person. Or even attend them at all. Can the information needed be understood via email? If yes do that. Precious time that could be used for more important tasks is wasted in meetings.
7. Work Remotely
It’s the 21st century. Showing up at a desk is so 2000 and late. A study by Havard Business Review found that employees who worked from home did more effective work.
If your home is where you perform better, work from home.
8. Start Your Day Early
Morning people created the work-time continuum we’re all having to live by and they might just have something up their sleeve. So be the early bird.
We all know what happens with the early bird (although nothing has been said about the worm. *Sigh* Poor guy)
9. Don’t Be Scared To Reject Tasks
Throughout the day, people are going to burden you with little tasks here and there. You might just become “Jack, the go-to guy”, we all love that guy.
The down side to this is valuable time that should be spent on your set aside activity for the day would be spent on these side distractions and will make a lot less effective at your actual job.
So, learn to say no. Or you could always say “oh give me 20 minutes to round up on this” odds are they’ll get tired of waiting and ask someone else
10. Focus on One Thing at a Time
We all love the possibility of being a multitasker, sadly it’s not always productive. Multitasking can actually be very detrimental. It lowers the IQ and reduces all round performance.
Instead, face each head on, one at a time.
11. Delegate/ Outsource
It’s been said that if you need something done right you should do it yourself. However, you could be saving your self so much time and affixing that time for more intricate work that truly needs your expertise if you just delegate or outsource the smaller or easier parts of the task.
12. Schedule Recurring Tasks at the Same Time
Say, everyday, you needed to deliver a spreadsheet to your boss or do rounds, scheduling these tasks at the same time each day allows room to develop efficient habits, handle with precision and prevent decision fatigue.
13. Avoid Procrastination
Always do your tasks as at when due or scheduled.
The first delay could lead to dire consequences or just kill your willpower.
Remember the saying – Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
We know this sounds cliché but it wouldn’t be cliché without an element of truth. Exercising is important for your mental well-being, reduces stress and increases brain activity. The banging body is also a plus to pull off those great work outfits.
15. Reorganize your Workspace
A less cluttered space will help you think more clearly and save you time when Searching for work place tools.
You can never do too much research. The world is constantly changing and there are new innovations every other day. Make sure you research to be kept abreast with things happening in your industry. This is a sure way to ensure effectiveness.
17. Plan the Next Week
Having a clear-cut vision of what you intend to carry out the following week keeps you on your toes, prevents tardiness and enhances your general productivity.
18. Get a Mentor
A mentor in your area of expertise is a factor you cannot ignore. Mentors in your field have already journeyed the path you’re on and will always provide helpful tips on how better to navigate and prioritize your tasks.
